Gate

Gate 19: The Gate of Wanting

Being wanted and having a place in the community: this wish belongs to Gate 19. The gate stands for a fine sense of what people need. The need at stake here is mainly about access to the community. The gate is linked with a sensitivity to what others need. Separation and being left out run counter to this gate. With it, you want to bridge divides and bring people together, and a genuine need to withdraw is part of it as well. Belonging works on the principle of give and take: you contribute support, and you need the group's support in return. At the most basic level, this is about food and being provided for. Oversensitivity is a challenge, since it can throw you off balance. It can become a burden when you put other people's needs above your own.

The six lines of Gate 19

Line 1: Interdependence

This line is about mutual dependence and about what becomes of your own nature once you succeed in getting close to others. In its exalted expression, your individuality stays intact even when reaching out to others works and you are taken in. In its weakened expression, the energy stays caught up in mulling things over after the approach has succeeded, and the wish to belong comes with the fear of being rejected later after all.

Line 2: Service

This line is about offering your own resources and strengths when you connect with others. In its exalted expression, the wish to be useful turns with devotion toward the highest values. In its weakened expression, a long stretch of hesitation comes before serving, until the wish to be needed does eventually turn into effort on behalf of others.

Line 3: Devotion

This line is about how being open to closeness also calls for watchfulness. In its exalted expression, community is tended almost on its own, with an ease and sensitivity that grow out of being accepted by others. In its weakened expression, oversensitivity gets in the way of the wish to be wanted, and moodiness can turn into carelessness.

Line 4: The Team Player

This line describes reaching out to others on your own initiative, in a way that draws in collaboration and welcomes it. In its exalted expression, a lot of energy flows outward, seeks company, and can carry the whole group along, provided the others keep up. In its weakened expression, your winning manner is accompanied by dissatisfaction over what others contribute, and their limits strike a nerve in your own sensitivity.

Line 5: Renunciation

Here, your own potential is limited for the sake of a larger goal. In its exalted expression, the energy feeds the self-limitation this line rests on and softens your own sensitivity. In its weakened expression, the renunciation can come across as arrogant and can dull your finer feelings. Here, self-limitation is the core of the line rather than a shortcoming.

Line 6: The Hermit

This line stands for withdrawal, where contact is more avoided than fully cut off. In its exalted expression, the energy mainly serves withdrawal, a wise seclusion that still opens up to visitors. In its weakened expression, the fear of rejection feeds the withdrawal, and it lasts until someone responds with reassurance.

Incarnation Crosses with the Sun in Gate 19

Right Angle Cross of the Four Ways

This cross represents four paths of basic human needs: food (Gate 19), a roof of your own along with territory (Gate 33), working together to obtain material resources (Gate 44), and knowledge that sustains you (Gate 24).

For you, with the Sun in Gate 19, the path you walk is one of approach and neediness. All of us need food, people with whom we can share our principles, and something that moves us inwardly. This is considered the most stressful of the four variants, because Gate 19 acts as a kind of pressure. The deepest concern is whether there is enough food for everyone, a problem humanity has not yet solved. Gate 19 is strongly territorial, and here having your own space is the first step toward individual freedom.

The theme is tied to revolution: either neediness resigns itself to its lot or it rises up, and forces from religion or spirituality that promise provision as a higher right can set it in motion. In times of need, it is wise to be careful that being provided for does not come at the price of being controlled by others.

The angle is personal: encounters enrich your own path, but they do not fundamentally pull you away from it. You grow into this theme when you follow your Strategy and Authority. It is not a prediction.

Juxtaposition Cross of Need

The Juxtaposition Cross of Need is rare and follows a fixed path of its own. The name is misleading, because this cross is deeply creative: it pushes toward strong creative expression, and it does so in private.

For you, with the Sun in Gate 19, having a space of your own and enough resources is essential so that your creative direction has room to unfold. The beauty created here for your own life is often only recognized once someone steps into that space. As a 4th line, you show this beauty mainly to your circle of friends.

This angle sits between the personal and the transpersonal and builds a bridge between them. It is like a train on fixed rails, and those who stay with you over time can ride along on your track. You grow into this theme when you follow your Strategy and Authority. It is not a prediction of events.

Left Angle Cross of Refinement

In this Left Angle Cross, the beauty of the private variant is opened up to the outside world, and those who carry it bring refinement. For comparison, the Right Angle says “I need,” while the Left Angle says “would you please,” though that in no way makes the Right Angle impolite.

For you, with your Sun in Gate 19, refinement means taking only what your own direction needs. What counts is a direction that keeps you provided for over the long run, rather than today’s meal. In the community, this cross stands for the insight that direction is what tips the balance, and in the wheel of crosses it closes the circle back to the first Sphinx.

When Gate 19 comes under pressure, it easily joins forces with the wrong powers just to get the principles it needs, for example by putting its last resources into promises of quick profit. Without Strategy and Authority, the need grabs hold as soon as any connection presents itself. The same goes for living in the Not-Self: the myth of this cross can only be lived through your own Strategy.

The angle is transpersonal: your theme matures in contact with others, and they can noticeably change your path. You can grow into it by following your Strategy and Authority. It is not a fate.
