Gate 20: The Gate of the Now

Being fully in the present moment, in the now: that is what Gate 20 stands for. It belongs to contemplation, to a presence that takes in the moment. This presence is tied to expression: you speak or act out of the moment. The voice of this gate says something like “I am now,” with the intuition “I know that I am now.” The gate takes its direction from what matters in this moment rather than from the past or from expectations about the future. There is a knowing about what the moment needs, and it shows up as an impulse before you even have a chance to think. It gets difficult when you treat being present as the same thing as acting right away. It helps to pause for a moment; whether and when you act is something you check with your Strategy and Authority. The gate has three harmonic gates, Gate 10, Gate 57 and Gate 34, and each of these pairings colors the now in its own way.

The six lines of Gate 20

Line 1: Superficiality

This line stands for trust in superficiality. In its exalted expression, surface expression becomes an art in its own right, one that consciously cultivates its lightness. In its weakened expression, the expression of the Personality stays on the outside, without anything deeper being added.

Line 2: The Dogmatist

This line is about an understanding that is kept narrow on purpose. In its exalted expression, this limited awareness stays a private matter and is lived out in strict withdrawal, where it does less harm. In its weakened expression, the way it is expressed can steer others in a narrow, restrictive direction. What matters is whether the narrowness stays private or gets pushed onto others.

Line 3: Self-Awareness

This line describes the self-perception that comes from looking at what you do and the effect it has. In its exalted expression, being aware of yourself in the moment helps you bring yourself into alignment and let yourself mature. In its weakened expression, self-awareness tips over into excess and gets in the way of your growth. At issue is the tension between helpful self-observation and self-absorption.

Line 4: Application

This line is about insight that only turns into action through others who are able to act. In its exalted expression, awareness becomes action only through them, and in the process it gets further than it could on its own. In its weakened expression, awareness would rather stay theory, and putting it into practice draws little interest.

Line 5: Realism

Here, contemplation by itself does not yet secure success. In its exalted expression, awareness can arrive at a well-made form through precise attention to detail. In its weakened expression, it shows up in the moment as displeasure with the reality you find, and it stirs up extra unrest. What becomes visible is how your view of the present either grounds your actions or makes them restless.

Line 6: Wisdom

This line stands for a kind of contemplation that gives rise to the gift of putting what has been understood into practice. In its exalted expression, personal awareness becomes values and ideals aimed at the common good, framed so that everyone can understand them and put them into practice. In its weakened expression, awareness is likewise made usable for everyone, but the drive comes from the appeal of the mental challenge rather than from the well-being of others.

Incarnation Crosses with the Sun in Gate 20

Right Angle Cross of the Sleeping Phoenix

Read spiritually, this cross holds a mutation sleeping in Gate 55, one that is meant to rise like a phoenix from the ashes and transform the cross.

The Sun in Gate 20 stands for being busy and getting things done in the now, while the version with the Sun in Gate 55 is driven by moods. Here, busyness is a form of sleep: you are busy without knowing why. There is a strong melancholic field that the busyness dissolves into, busy and happy or busy and sad. This incarnation is considered deeply superficial, with no moral judgment intended, and the most extreme expression of the cross. Much of this happens without the people who carry it noticing.

The angle is personal: encounters enrich your own path but do not fundamentally pull you away from it. You grow into this theme when you follow your Strategy and Authority. It is not a prediction.

Juxtaposition Cross of the Now

The Juxtaposition Cross of the Now is rare, and it is a fixed path of its own. It is the most existential of all the crosses: the people who carry it sink so deeply into the now that they hardly seem present, and they have little feel for the past or the future.

For you, with the Sun in Gate 20, the part of your Design that is oriented toward community stays separate from your experience of the now. When you are immersed in this kind of absorption, you may not notice that friends are there or that other people are in the room, and that can cause difficulties. Even as children, people with this cross can unsettle those around them.

This angle sits between the personal and the transpersonal and builds a bridge between them. It is like a train running on fixed rails, and those who travel with you for a longer stretch can ride along on your track. You grow into this theme when you follow your Strategy and Authority. It is not a prediction of events.

Left Angle Cross of Duality

This Left Angle Cross can bridge the inner split. It looks for encounters with others where fulfillment arises and the two sides of life come together.

Like the Juxtaposition Cross, it carries an inner conflict, between the Individual side that wants to be left in peace and the Tribal side that enjoys company. For you, with the Sun in Gate 20, this cross can act as a bridge between the tribe and the individual and bring Mutation to the tribe. The tribe is considered basically open to new blood, because it is aware of how small its gene pool is.

Hard work and busy activity impress the tribe, which can put this productive energy to use. It is willing to make the trade for Mutation as long as both sides come out ahead.

This angle is transpersonal: your theme matures through contact with others, and they can noticeably change your path. You can grow into it by following your Strategy and Authority. It is not a fixed destiny.
