Gate 4: The Gate of Formulization
Gate 4 lets your mind formulate answers. An open question puts it under pressure, and it wants to resolve it. Here an answer counts only as a possibility, not as a fact. Some turn out to be nonsense, and a formula is only the starting point of logical understanding. Solutions are meant to prove themselves in life; if they don't, they get dropped. One trap is building solutions for problems that don't even exist, or preparing answers for imagined situations so you feel armed and ready. Some people also aren't looking for a solution at all, only for a chance to unload what's weighing on them. This gate works best when others ask for advice: then your answers are often inventive and question what seemed settled, and it matters that you separate what is essential from what is beside the point. With its harmonic gate, Gate 63, this gate forms a pair: Gate 63 supplies the doubt, and Gate 4 answers with a possible formula.
The six lines of Gate 4
Line 1: Pleasure
This line is about enjoyment that depends on timing. In its exalted expression, your sense of the moment and the circumstances stays alert, and pleasure tends to play out without harmful consequences. At the same time, there is a recognition that understanding also has its own timing. In its weakened expression, the timing is forced, and excessive self-discipline can tip over into overindulgence.
Line 2: Acceptance
This line is about noticing limits, both in yourself and in others. That can make you tolerant and willing to hold off on judgment. In its exalted expression, there is a forgiving recognition that understanding does not come equally to everyone. In its weakened expression, the ego is tempted to take advantage of other people's failures and their lack of understanding.
Line 3: Irresponsibility
This line describes the tendency not to really dig in as long as things still work with less effort. In its exalted expression, formulas are enjoyed for their own sake, without asking what practical use they have. In its weakened expression, the lack of effort gets dressed up as a deliberate course correction so that it can stay.
Line 4: The Liar
This line stands for role-playing as an art form, the way an actor embodies it. In its exalted expression, imagination strengthens your sense of meaning, even when it leads you astray, and it can help you find or illustrate formulas. In its weakened expression, imagination and facts are easily confused.
Line 5: Seduction
This line is about letting others carry the responsibility so you can shield yourself from the consequences. In its exalted expression, the line stands for recognition that comes through the understanding of others, even without any effort of your own. In its weakened expression, cynicism arises because the understanding of others has to be acknowledged, along with mere lip service to outdated values.
Line 6: Excess
This line is about repeatedly and knowingly crossing the bounds of convention, and that does not come without consequences. In its exalted expression, experience can teach self-restraint: an understanding that is still incomplete is recognized and allowed to mature with patience. In its weakened expression, the gap in understanding is seen, yet without patience you knowingly accept the price that excess brings.

Incarnation Crosses with the Sun in Gate 4
Right Angle Cross of Explanation
This cross revolves around the need to express inner knowing. What is heard inwardly wants to go out into the world as language people can understand. This step of translation is considered hard work. The image for it is a child who has the answer clearly in mind but doesn't say it out loud, and so needs a lot of practice in explaining.
For you, with the Sun in Gate 4, the search for answers is part of this. Your own answer seems like the right one and wants to be explained to others. At first, an answer like this counts only as a theory. It becomes solid only once details support it and it has been tested and confirmed. Unconventional theories that are hard to prove are part of this too. What feels unfamiliar gets repeated over years so that it becomes familiar. In this way, a theory can also grow into something valuable.
The angle is personal: encounters enrich your own path, but they don't fundamentally pull you away from it. You grow into this theme when you follow your Strategy and Authority. It is not a prediction.
Juxtaposition Cross of Formulization
The Juxtaposition Cross of Formulization is rare, and it is a fixed path of its own. With the related Right Angle Cross of Explanation, explaining is part of the theme. Here that part is missing, and what remains is the gift of forming formulas.
For you, with the Sun in Gate 4, the gift lies in recognizing patterns and formulas in everything. Theories get put out into the world without being backed up or pursued further, because saying them out loud is enough. That very quality can be deeply stimulating for others.
As a Juxtaposition with a fixed fourth line, this cross passes on its formulas regardless of how others respond.
This angle sits between the personal and the transpersonal and builds a bridge between them. It is like a train running on fixed rails, and people who travel with you for a longer stretch can ride along on your track. You grow into this theme when you follow your Strategy and Authority. This is not a prediction of events.
Left Angle Cross of Revolution
With this Left Angle Cross, upheaval grows out of formulas. In this variant, they tend to be formed somewhat at random at first, and whether anything truly revolutionary develops from them remains open.
For you, with the Sun in Gate 4, the theme lies with the formula itself, with the answer that gets found. With a 5th Line comes the demand that it has to be practical: only a formula with a practical foundation becomes transformative. So what is meant here are upheavals built on theories that can be applied, not formulas for their own sake.
Because this is a transpersonal cross, nothing comes about here without other people.
The angle is transpersonal: your theme matures in contact with others, and they can noticeably change your path. You can grow into it when you follow your Strategy and Authority. It is not a fate.
