Gate 46: The Gate of the Determination of the Self

Turning up at just the right moment, in a spot where something of value can be found: this is called a fortunate coincidence and is linked with Gate 46. At its core, this gate is about discovering what is valuable in whatever place and at whatever moment you happen to be. The gate carries a determination of the self that the teaching describes as an attitude, one that promises nothing about the outcome. It's worth noticing where something valuable has come your way more or less by chance. An open attitude helps, one that looks at whatever comes without rigid expectations. The harmonic Gate 29 contributes a willingness to commit to experiences whose value only shows itself at the end. This kind of luck is seen as sustaining, but also as changeable.

The six lines of Gate 46

Line 1: Being Discovered

When you work quietly and with devotion, you are sometimes discovered when you least expect it. In its exalted expression, this is about creative work that is complete in itself and done with devotion; recognition is not the goal. In its weakened expression, you spot talents in others that no one has discovered yet, and this eye for talent can then serve mainly your own interests.

Line 2: Demanding Prima Donna

On the way to success, you may at times come across as demanding. Does real talent back up this manner? In its exalted expression, the depth of your talent helps you break through, even if your high standards and persistence can put others off. In its weakened expression, you demand an unrealistic amount and want to be treated as successful before the success has actually arrived.

Line 3: Anticipation

Future success can be preserved or squandered. This line asks whether you stay with what has proven itself. In its exalted expression, a practical sense holds on to the attitudes and patterns that brought good fortune and does not get lost in further expectations. In its weakened expression, the hoped-for success is anticipated in the mind, as if it were already here.

Line 4: Impact

This line is about impact and recognition. How do you handle success, and how do you treat the people who made it possible? In its exalted expression, the line stands for recognition that grows out of good fortune and tenacious determination, and for a quick path from obscurity to influence. In its weakened expression, success can easily make you lose sight of those who helped bring it about.

Line 5: Pace

The rhythm that led to success asks to be either kept or abandoned. This is what this line is about. In its exalted expression, a practical instinct stays with the beat that brought success and avoids any radical break from what has been tested. In its weakened expression, you drop the proven rhythm and patterns without good reason.

Line 6: Integrity

Commitments bind you. This line asks whether you can say no or whether you promise too much. In its exalted expression, you protect yourself by weighing beforehand how strongly a commitment will bind you. You clearly turn down obligations that would box you in. In its weakened expression, a drive for success that knows no “no” overstretches your own resources, and self-deception then becomes likely.

Incarnation Crosses with the Sun in Gate 46

Right Angle Cross of the Vessel of Love

This cross brings together four kinds of love: love of yourself and your own behavior (Gate 10), love of humanity (Gate 15), an all-embracing love that goes beyond the personal (Gate 25), and love of the body (Gate 46). With Gate 46, the phase of searching for direction comes to an end in the Quarter of Duality, and from there on love accompanies the gates that follow.

With the Sun in Gate 46, all four forms flow through love of the body. People with this cross experience their body, its changes and its subtlest stirrings with great awareness. Gate 46 stands for what may be great good fortune, because it rests on the idea of being in the right spot at the right moment, and that spot is your own body. It is the gift of loving the world, often without a leaning toward the spiritual: going deeper into life instead of escaping from it. This is considered deeply sensual, without sexuality needing to be part of it.

This variant seeks fulfillment through Gate 29, in the right commitment, one that suits the needs of the body and does not harm it. In abstract experience, Gate 46 stands for doing something for its own sake. If you lose yourself completely in an experience and only look back on it later, you hold the key to gaining something from it.

A Right Angle Cross points to a personal theme: your path belongs to you, and encounters color it without changing its direction. It is neither an entitlement nor a fate, but something you live when you follow your Strategy and Authority.

Juxtaposition Cross of Serendipity

This cross stands for the good fortune of things coming together, of standing where you need to be at just the right time. The fourth line is seen here as the one that makes use of opportunities and shows up exactly when the decisive moment arrives.

What the Right Angle Cross of this gate seeks out as a commitment falls into your lap here as a happy accident. To everything abstract, this cross says: don’t worry while you’re in the middle of it; save that for afterward. Part of the theme is that success can grow out of being fully present.

The gate of your Personality Sun gives the cross its name and colors the other three gates, whose themes show through it.

Juxtaposition Crosses are rare. Here your path is fixed and your own, a bridge between a personal and a transpersonal theme, much like a train running on its rails. In this view, someone who travels alongside you for a longer time can ride with you for a stretch. None of this is a prediction. The meaning shows itself over the course of your life.

Left Angle Cross of Healing

In Human Design, this is considered the only cross that has to do with healing. The first variant, with the Sun in Gate 25, means healing as medical, technical skill; the second means healing through love. This is an interpretation and makes no promise of healing.

With the Sun in Gate 46, people on this cross want to heal with love. This love is neither sexual love nor charity. It can show up out of nowhere, is lived through the body and through touch, and needs a commitment to the other person. Read spiritually, it ties you to the whole and is impersonal, even when others read personal traits into it; in everyday life, it is easily mistaken for desire.

The flip side is waiting to be healed by love yourself. Love is what these people recognize most clearly. Whether their love makes a difference can leave them at a loss, and that can feel beautiful and painful at the same time.

A Left Angle Cross is a transpersonal theme that only comes to fulfillment together with others. This path needs people who fit it and help carry it. That is not fate; the meaning of the cross reveals itself over the course of your life.

Human Design is a system of interpretation, not a scientifically proven method. Read this description as an invitation to observe yourself.
