What is a rising sign?

Your rising sign, or Ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. In astrology the Sun stands for your core and the Moon for your feelings, while the rising sign describes how you come across: the first impression you make, the way you approach new things and how you start them.

Many people recognize their rising sign most in unfamiliar situations: the first day at a new job, or a party where they know no one. That is where the rising sign tends to show first, before others get to know the Sun in you.

Why the minute matters: birth time and time window

Seen from Earth, the sky turns around us once a day, so the rising sign moves through all twelve signs, about one sign every two hours on average. Depending on the sign and the latitude, that can be under an hour or over three. If you were born close to a change, five minutes can mean a different rising sign.

That is why we ask how exact your time is. We calculate for the minute you give and for both ends of its margin (± 5, 15 or 60 minutes). If the sign stays the same across that window, we show it as certain, with the times between which your rising sign keeps the same sign. If a change falls inside the window, you see both signs and the time of the change. Without a birth time we do not calculate a rising sign: the card stays sealed.

Rising sign, Sun and Moon: your big three

The Sun stands for who you are at the core and what gives you energy. The Moon for what you need to feel safe and how you react to feelings. The rising sign for the way you meet the world. Together they are called the big three.

An example: a Capricorn Sun with Leo rising often comes across as warm and open, while a serious plan runs in the background. Someone with the Sun and the rising sign in the same sign usually comes across much as they are. That is why this calculator always reveals all three cards.

How we calculate your rising sign

From the date, time and place we first work out the exact moment of your birth in universal time, using the time zone and daylight saving time that applied at your birthplace back then. If your time falls in an hour that happened twice because the clocks went back, we ask instead of guessing.

For that moment and the coordinates of your birthplace, the Swiss Ephemeris, a library of planetary positions widely used in astrology, gives the point of the ecliptic rising in the east. We use the tropical zodiac of Western astrology, in which Aries begins at the March equinox. We calculate your Sun and Moon the same way. We do not store your details.

Questions and answers

Questions about the rising sign

Can I find my rising sign without a birth time?

No. The rising sign changes about every two hours, so without a time any answer would be a guess. We still show your Sun and Moon; the rising sign card stays sealed until you add the time. It is usually on your birth certificate.

How exact does my birth time need to be?

As exact as you can get it. With a time to within about 15 minutes or an hour, we check the whole window and tell you whether the rising sign changes inside it. If your time is far from a change, a rough time is often enough.

Why does another calculator show a different sign?

Usually because of the time zone or daylight saving time: some calculators ask for a time zone or assume today’s. We use the rules that applied at your birthplace on the day you were born. Rarely, a calculator uses the sidereal zodiac of Indian astrology, where the signs are shifted by about 24 degrees.

What does it mean if my card shows two signs?

Your rising sign changes sign within the margin of your birth time. We show you both signs and the time of the change. If you know your exact time, it decides which one is yours.

Is the rising sign the same as the Ascendant?

Yes. Rising sign and Ascendant mean the same thing: the sign on the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth.

Do you store my birth details?

No. The date, time and place go to our server for the calculation and are neither stored nor logged there. They never appear in the address bar, and your browser keeps the result only while the tab is open. The share image is made in your browser and shows only your three signs.

What does the calculator cost?

Nothing. It is free, needs no sign-up and sets no cookies.
