Gate 30: The Gate of Recognizing Feelings

Gate 30 carries a powerful desire that comes from feeling: the fire of longing. You want to experience life firsthand in as many variations as possible, and within that desire lies an urge toward change. How intensely a desire flares up at first says little about whether it will hold. Whether you follow it is something you test with Strategy and Authority. This gate leaves the outcome open: paying attention to what actually happens is seen as more fulfilling than insisting on a particular result. The difficult part is an almost insatiable wish to try everything. The question then becomes which desires belong to you and which are burning simply because they burn. One side of this gate looks back: you want to repeat what was beautiful, and you can find that repetition rarely holds up.

The six lines of Gate 30

Line 1: Composure

This line is about staying composed in the middle of confusion. In its exalted expression, limitations are put to the best possible use, and your own feelings give you firm footing, whatever the situation. In its weakened expression, composure holds, but at the cost of progress, because you don’t let go of the feelings that support your balance.

Line 2: Pragmatism

This line stands for balance between extremes. In its exalted expression, your strength flows sparingly and productively into the matter at hand rather than wearing itself out on feelings. In its weakened expression, feelings soak up the energy, which then spends itself pushing against limits in an excess of fighting spirit. The point is a way of handling feelings that neither suppresses them nor lets them boil over.

Line 3: Resignation

This line is about accepting what is. In its exalted expression, this acceptance is rooted in an awareness of renewal, understood spiritually as karma, rebirth and resurrection. This attitude is not fatalism. In its weakened expression, this very knowledge can both feed despair and hold it off, so that the acceptance comes with bright moods as well as dark ones.

Line 4: Excessive Pace

This line describes an unrealistic pace that pushes all the way to your own limits. In its exalted expression, a restless, highly charged emotional energy keeps driving the pace higher and higher; sober analysis can counter this and bring back a sense of measure. In its weakened expression, the feelings swell unchecked until they discharge in outbursts.

Line 5: Irony

This line is about seeing through goals that won't last and devoting yourself to them anyway. In its exalted expression, you draw strength from the experience that progress is possible, even when new feelings at first bring old ones back. In its weakened expression, this return of the old during new experiences stirs up anger and frustration, to the point of wanting to shake off the whole process.

Line 6: Enforcement

This line stands for the discipline to act in a way that feels coherent and to stick with it. In its exalted expression, you are carried by the determination to weed out what is harmful and let go of negative feelings, without setting aside your responsibility for those who are weaker. In its weakened expression, a peaceable disposition too often lets burdensome things slide, and negative feelings are not consistently released.

Incarnation Crosses with the Sun in Gate 30

Right Angle Cross of Contagion

This Right Angle Cross stands for a desire that stirs up expectations: there has to be more than this. This is where humanity's process of expectation begins, and desire whispers that there is nothing you couldn't try.

For you, with the Sun in Gate 30, the cross carries the urge to try new things. The path is trial and error, and through these experiences others recognize what helps and what harms. The effect is contagious in both directions: when someone fails, they warn the others, and when something works out, it gives them courage, while some hold back until someone else has tested it first. Opposite, with the Earth in Gate 29, the yes to desire is waiting, and so desire can turn into a blind commitment to get involved in something.

The angle is personal: encounters enrich your own path, but they don't fundamentally pull you away from it. You grow into this theme when you follow your Strategy and Authority. It is not a prediction.

Juxtaposition Cross of Fates

The Juxtaposition Cross of Fates is rare and a fixed path of its own. It stands for the sweet and the sour of life. Its name carries the image of the goddesses of fate and their thread of life.

People on this cross are considered deeply obsessed, and they push everything to the extreme. For you, with the Sun in Gate 30, the teaching holds that your Design side keeps you going without pause, often without it being clear what for, until a sharp break slows you down. Burning out and failing are seen as part of this cross's theme. Its value lies in staying with something long after others have stopped. Some profound discoveries trace back to people obsessed in this way.

This angle sits between the personal and the transpersonal and builds a bridge between them. It is like a train on fixed rails, and those who stay with you over time can ride along on your track. You grow into this theme when you follow your Strategy and Authority. It does not predict events.

Left Angle Cross of Industry

This Left Angle Cross is among the busiest: the people who carry it keep going tirelessly and push everyone else to get to work. Anyone who just sits around will hear about it.

For you, with your Sun in Gate 30, this is driven by the conviction that nothing moves forward without activity. Whether the activity is the right one often stays an open question, and you rarely do anything for yourself. Shared busyness brings people together, in the expectation that something will come of it. Busyness does not have to be productive. In the Not-Self, the cross resembles a kind of forced labor. According to the teaching, your activity becomes fruitful when it comes from your Strategy and Authority rather than from busyness for its own sake.

This angle is transpersonal: your theme matures in contact with others, and they can noticeably change your path. You can grow into it by following your Strategy and Authority. It is not a fate.
