Gate 31: The Gate of Leading
Leading through influence is the theme of Gate 31. Your influence works mainly through the spoken word rather than through your own actions. The voice of this gate says something like “I lead,” and that often stays little more than a claim spoken out loud. Your words carry weight, and others can take their bearings from them, even when you hold no official leadership role. This kind of leadership looks ahead: it sees where a path leads and wants to steer groups in a direction it considers good. Lived in a way that is true to you, this leadership forces nothing. In this view, it is a service that depends on the community accepting it. You use your Strategy and Authority to check when to speak up. It gets difficult when leadership is supposed to rest on words the speaker does not live by; then it loses credibility. A fitting question here is whether you live what you proclaim.
The six lines of Gate 31
Line 1: Manifestation
What shows up here is that influence does not arise in a vacuum. In its exalted expression, leadership comes through quite naturally, with an impact that is hard to hold back and that touches many lives. In its weakened expression, leadership feels unnatural, because its radiance is turned inward and it only announces an effect without letting it unfold.
Line 2: Arrogance
This line is about acting on your own initiative without guidance. In its exalted expression, leadership serves higher principles and does not wait for general applause to do so. In its weakened expression, justified arrogance rushes ahead too early out of nervous tension. The line asks whether leadership moves forward out of conviction or acts hastily out of tension.
Line 3: Selection
This line is about choosing the influences and followers your drive to lead attaches itself to. In its exalted expression, your leadership grows through carefully chosen, fitting influences that you let guide your own behavior. In its weakened expression, overflowing enthusiasm can override your selectiveness; then every follower gets taken on, along with the risk that comes with them.
Line 4: Intention
Here, whether influence succeeds depends on how others perceive it. In its exalted expression, what people mainly see in the leadership is its caring, protective side, and they recognize it publicly. In its weakened expression, others read the claim to lead as self-aggrandizement or an attempt at manipulation and pile negativity onto it. So the same leadership is read differently depending on who is looking.
Line 5: Self-Righteousness
This line describes how a self-righteous attitude limits your influence on others. In its exalted expression, a natural specialization ripens in seclusion; it calls above all for leading yourself, and even when fully matured, its influence hardly carries over to the outside world. In its weakened expression, the focus on your own experience is enough in itself, there is no drive to reach outward, and leadership stays confined to yourself.
Line 6: Follow-Through
This line is about whether your actions live up to the leadership you claim. In its exalted expression, your words are matched by fitting deeds, and it is exactly this match between what you say and what you do that makes your leadership credible. In its weakened expression, the follow-through stays shallow and the leadership exists only in words; what you say and what you do drift apart.

Incarnation Crosses with the Sun in Gate 31
Right Angle Cross of the Unexpected
The unexpected ties together all the variants of this Right Angle Cross: a life full of surprises, good and bad alike, and people who give the world a sense of unpredictability. At times, as they remind us, caring for a person matters more than staying loyal to the law.
For you, with your Sun in Gate 31, the unexpected takes the form of leadership. The image is of leaders who appear out of nowhere and are chosen by the collective. This challenges the king and tribal leadership, because these people carry enough inner strength to draw the collective to them. At first, hardly anyone expects them to lead. Their leadership only comes forward in unexpected moments, the way the most unlikely character in a movie turns into the heroine after a crash.
Part of this theme is that influence or a leadership role can suddenly fall to you, and then what matters is how you handle it, whether you are prepared or not. Over time, a willingness to take risks can become a growing dilemma.
The angle is personal: encounters enrich your own path, but they do not fundamentally pull you away from it. You grow into this theme when you follow your Strategy and Authority. It is not a prediction.
Juxtaposition Cross of Influence
The Juxtaposition Cross of Influence is rare and a fixed path of its own. Because the 4th line is fixed, people with this cross come across as naturally influential: they stay consistent and hold on to things.
For you, with the Sun in Gate 31, part of the theme is that influence can grow over time as you work things through in your mind, and that it is something you keep working at without letup. The Right Angle Cross has no idea of its own capacity to lead, while this variant tests its influence on everyone it can reach, like a child in daycare trying to steer the other kids.
This angle sits between the personal and the transpersonal and builds a bridge between them. It is like a train on fixed rails, and those who travel with you for a longer stretch can ride along on your track. You grow into this theme when you follow your Strategy and Authority. It is not a prediction of events.
Left Angle Cross of the Alpha
In the teaching, this Left Angle Cross stands for powerful leadership figures whose transpersonal geometry reaches more people than any other. With a 5th line, they draw projections, for example as saints, saviors or generals.
For you, with the Sun in Gate 31, the influence works in a practical way: the cross leads others by mentally organizing things for them, and above all it gives them the confidence that they can survive. The image comes from the animal kingdom, where the alpha makes sure everyone gets something to eat. In the same way, this cross is meant to ease the deep fear of having too little or being wiped out, even when that fear is partly projected by others. In the teaching, people like this can, as they mature, rise into influential positions and exercise that power.
The angle is transpersonal: your theme matures through contact with others, and they can noticeably change your path. You can grow into it by following your Strategy and Authority. It is not a fate.
