Gate 32: The Gate of Continuity
What holds up over the long run? A feel for that, continuity, belongs to Gate 32. It is an instinct for what can last. You respond instinctively to changing circumstances while keeping an eye on stability. Your basic stance is one of preserving: you don't rush to accept change, and you let it in only after it has been tested. The core fear of this gate is the fear of failure. The instinct notices early when relationships, plans or the community start to waver, and it allows change only when that change passes the test. Lived in alignment, this means recognizing where real potential lies and balancing the forces that preserve with the forces that transform. Things can get difficult when you hesitate for a long time, weighing the risks of a change over and over until the decision becomes agony. Against the push of its harmonic gate, Gate 54, this gate acts as a brake and checks what can actually be changed.
The six lines of Gate 32
Line 1: Preservation
This line asks whether enough attention goes to what is essential while a process is being preserved. In its exalted expression, your instinct unfolds because you tend to each stage mindfully and in a way that serves life. In its weakened expression, there is a strong urge to skip past what is essential, along with inattention and a worry that there isn’t enough potential; continuity can then easily suffer.
Line 2: Restraint
This line centers on restraining power and on how you deal with control, whether you are the one exercising it or the one experiencing it. In its exalted expression, you hold power in check for the sake of harmony, which makes possible a change that also aims at the well-being of others. In its weakened expression, frustration with control, especially from a position of strength, tends to lead to social withdrawal rather than to persistently steering things.
Line 3: Lack of Continuity
This line asks how a lack of continuity is handled in times of upheaval. In its exalted expression, reliability remains despite indecision and constant reassessment, and it comes from an alert mind. In its weakened expression, the upheaval lacks instinct, so clinging to outdated standards easily falls out of step with the times.
Line 4: Right Is Might
This line is about holding to principles in times of change and how far that steadfastness reaches. In its exalted expression, the instinct stays with sustaining principles even in upheaval, principles that hold true beyond the change itself. In its weakened expression, loyalty to your own principles is tied to your own security and lasts only as long as no threat comes from outside.
Line 5: Flexibility
At its core, this line is about adjusting to circumstances. In its exalted expression, a certain superficiality serves as a protective shell that keeps your inner self hidden, so in times of change your instinct easily fits whatever situation you are in. In its weakened expression, your instinct can refuse to adapt and may show itself as an immediate, often fierce rejection of conformity.
Line 6: Calm
This line is about meeting impermanence with calm. In its exalted expression, the instinct holds a readiness to accept change and transformation, whether or not calm comes from it. In its weakened expression, change feels like nothing more than passing away, and so like proof that nothing has meaning, which can stir up fear and weigh heavily on your mood.

Incarnation Crosses with the Sun in Gate 32
Right Angle Cross of Maya
This cross is about how Maya, the world of appearances, holds on to us. It isn't bad; it is simply our world. The teaching advises embracing it consciously, because you can't step out of your own role in it.
For you, with the Sun in Gate 32, Maya holds on through the fear of disappearing. Gate 32 is considered the Gate of the Fear of Failure, where very old fears of extinction still echo. When this fear is overblown, it shows up as stockpiling out of fear of ending up with nothing. The instinctive seriousness this variant brings is rare, and it is devoted to the survival of the species. Gate 32 also stands for evaluation: it is about judging the value of things, and failing means missing that value, for example when a shop gives its goods away too cheaply. As a counterpart, it seeks the right ambitious partner (Gate 54), the way a groom seeks his bride, and that partner’s ambition keeps material development moving forward.
When it comes to the community, this cross takes others under its wing and trains them, even to the point where they surpass it. That is where its deepest grace lies.
The angle is personal: encounters enrich your own path, but they don't fundamentally pull you off it. You grow into this theme when you follow your Strategy and Authority. It is not a prediction.
Juxtaposition Cross of Preservation
The Juxtaposition Cross of Preservation is rare and follows a fixed path of its own. Gate 32 stands for duration and continuity and is considered the most preserving of all the gates. Those who carry it want to secure resources and avoid risks, because they fear being wiped out.
For you, with the Sun in Gate 32, Design Gates 56 and 60 bring a need for stimulation within limits, in place of the inner truth and eye for detail that could guide a purely evaluative approach. Things get held onto even after their time has passed, out of the conviction that they will come back. That is why this kind of holding on is a poor fit for fashion businesses.
On this cross there are also people whose concern is protecting the forests and life on Earth. The world needs those who preserve.
This angle sits between the personal and the transpersonal and forms a bridge between them. It is like a train running on fixed rails, and the people who stay with you over time can ride along on your track. You grow into this theme as you follow your Strategy and Authority. This is not a prediction of events.
Left Angle Cross of Limitation
With this Left Angle Cross, the people you are connected with decide whether things succeed or fail. Together with them, a shared career path can even take shape.
For you, with the Sun in Gate 32, business and material matters are at the center, along with assessment and the fear of failing. Nothing satisfies a Gate 32 as much as continuity, across generations in the same place. The focus is on what is realistic in business, even in the face of great ambition. With a 5th line, projections come in as well, and these can create difficulties. Here the question is whether assessments and products hold up in practice and last over time. With a 6th line, it weighs heavily as soon as continuity or secure value falls away. People who encounter this cross sense something of this, and the advice this cross gives can be sobering.
It helps to begin something in line with your Strategy and Authority, because a break in continuity weighs heavily here.
The angle is transpersonal: your theme matures through contact with others, and they can noticeably change your path. You can grow into it by following your Strategy and Authority. It is not a fate.
