Gate 33: The Gate of Privacy

A time of distance, when what you have lived through gets processed: Gate 33 stands for retreat. You have experiences, then step back, and afterward pass on what you learned from them so that others can learn from what happened. Retreat has to do with privacy and with cycles: something new only begins once what has ended has been quietly reflected on. This gate is one of the storytelling gates; its stories are sober, brief and drawn from real-life experience. Retreat can give you strength and clarity about what your experiences have taught you. The gate is also said to hold value for the community: experience that gets told keeps alive what earlier generations learned. Whether you speak or stay silent is above all a question of timing. This gate forms a pair with its harmonic gate, Gate 13: Gate 13 takes in secrets, and Gate 33 puts experience into words.

The six lines of Gate 33

Line 1: Avoidance

This line is about the moment when it is wiser to step out of the way of a superior force. The question is whether the departure still comes in time. In its exalted expression, you recognize that you are not equal to this situation and withdraw completely. That way, what can be saved is preserved. In its weakened expression, you stay even though everything is becoming too much. What looks like steadfastness may then be closer to recklessness.

Line 2: Yielding

This line is about yielding to someone stronger. What matters is whether it stays a conscious choice or takes hold of you on the inside. In its exalted expression, giving way serves as a tactic: you buy time, build up your own strengths, and may still hold your ground later on. In its weakened expression, outward adjustment turns into inner surrender. You lose sight of your own position, and resentment builds up beneath your agreement.

Line 3: Attitude in Retreat

Here the focus is on the attitude you bring to stepping back. It decides whether the distance turns into a gain or a loss. In its exalted expression, the retreat remains a responsible act of holding yourself back. It protects what is already there, and the will to carry on later stays alive. In its weakened expression, the wish for distance tips over into carelessness, and the retreat can then happen abruptly, without others seeing it coming.

Line 4: Retreat with Dignity

This line describes a parting that comes about without upheaval and lets you keep your dignity. In its exalted expression, you are carried by the confidence that something new begins after an ending. The retreat becomes a time of rest and renewal. In its weakened expression, the retreat feels like nothing more than something forced on you. Its renewing value then stays hidden.

Line 5: The Right Timing

This line is about timing: do you keep your intentions to yourself until the right moment comes, or do you give them away too early? In its exalted expression, part of this is voicing your plans only when the moment is right. In its weakened expression, confusion quickly arises as soon as others have a say in the timing or find out too early.

Line 6: Letting Go Inside

This line stands for withdrawing and, in that retreat, also letting go of something on the inside. In its exalted expression, you actually manage to do this. You can be alone without holding a grudge, and your strength goes into recovery instead of reproach. In its weakened expression, the letting go stays unfinished. What prompted the retreat is behind you, yet doubts keep gnawing at you and delay your recovery.

Incarnation Crosses with the Sun in Gate 33

Right Angle Cross of the Four Ways

This cross has four arms: Return, Encounter, Approach and Retreat, and each Quarter receives one of them. With your Sun in Gate 33, Retreat is the arm of this cross. It closes the Quarter of Civilization and centers on privacy, seclusion and a special, protected place.

Civilization begins with a room of your own. This privacy doesn't have to belong to the individual alone; protecting your family is part of it too. For that, you need a protected place that belongs to you and that you control yourself. In this view, without such a place there is no privacy.

As a Right Angle Cross, it stands for a purpose that concerns your own path. Other people enrich it, but they don't fundamentally redirect it. You grow into it by following your Strategy and Authority; it is not fate.

Juxtaposition Cross of Retreat

The Juxtaposition Cross of Retreat links retreat with aesthetics. The image for it: after a long journey, you fall into your own bed.

Your own space is seen as the most beautiful one. That is where aesthetic possibilities unfold, carried by the longing for beauty and expression that Design Gates 2 and 1 bring with them.

There is another image behind this. Civilization only begins with people having their own homes. Whoever has their own territory gains integrity and strength, and that is why society has to change, because then no one holds total power over everyone anymore. Peace only becomes possible once everyone has a roof overhead, enough to eat, and the right to their own language and tradition.

The Juxtaposition Cross is rare, and it is a fixed path of its own, like a train on its tracks. People who spend a long time with you can be drawn along onto this path. You grow into it; it is neither fate nor entitlement.

Left Angle Cross of Refinement

The Left Angle Cross of Refinement builds on retreat. Owning a house is not enough. It is meant to be furnished and refined, from the rug and the color of the walls down to the fork, the bowl and the pitcher, and in the process your whole way of living changes.

With the Sun in Gate 33, this happens on the inside. The image for it is a plain, dirty outer wall with a palace waiting behind its gate. Your place of retreat becomes a source of inspiration, a base from which what lives inside you can be carried out into the world. In the protection of your own space, the theme of creating beauty can grow.

In this teaching, you and your surroundings form a unity: enriching your own space means enriching your own life, and your home is like an extension of your body. On a spiritual reading, a deep inner refinement takes place, and out of it can come insights into how a fulfilled life can take shape within your own realm.

As a Left Angle Cross, it is fulfilled in your time with others, whose influence can noticeably change your path. You grow into it; it is not a prediction.
