Gate

Gate 6: The Gate of Friction

Gate 6 is about emotional friction and how you deal with conflict. The hexagram is named “Conflict,” because growth here needs friction. This gate regulates closeness: it's about whom you let near you and whom you don't. Your emotional state colors your surroundings here. Clarity and balance can calm a situation, while something vague or aggressive can heat it up. The image for this is the mediator, who weighs a situation, looks for balance, can make peace, or says plainly where their limit is. Closeness tends to grow here when you stand up for yourself and engage in disagreements that lead somewhere, more than when you avoid conflict. Attraction, too, arises from the tension between opposites.

The six lines of Gate 6

Line 1: Retreat

This line carries the insight that there is little to gain from wearing yourself out against a superior force. In its exalted expression, retreat counts as a transitional phase rather than a defeat, and out of this renewal, emotional steadiness in handling conflict can grow. In its weakened expression, retreat is experienced as a personal weakness, and conflicts throw your balance off more easily.

Line 2: Advance and Retreat

This line is about making the most of a weaker position through well-timed advances and retreats. In its exalted expression, a fine sensitivity with an eye for detail finds the weakest point in a conflict and applies emotional pressure right there. In its weakened expression, that sensitivity is missing, which can easily land you in the middle of conflicts where your own advances achieve little.

Line 3: Loyalty

This line is about finding support and drawing strength from weakness. In one reading, the connection with the harmonic Gate 59 can bring something new into being. In its exalted expression, deep feelings enrich closeness and intimacy, and old forms dissolve in union. In its weakened expression, commitment is experienced as submission to the existing order and is rejected, to the point of pushing closeness away.

Line 4: Triumph

This line stands for a position of natural, unchallenged power. In its exalted expression, victory comes with generosity and wisdom and opens your eyes to what is new, and feelings can shape a relationship. In its weakened expression, superiority without emotional control can tip over into heavy-handed force.

Line 5: Arbitration

Handing a dispute over to a higher authority to settle takes trust, and that is what this line is about. This trust grows out of careful examination and emotional discipline. In its exalted expression, harmony comes about by avoiding direct conflict; that same sensitivity, though, can also lead to shying away from closeness. In its weakened expression, your own judgment is taken to be the best, and the other side's concerns get passed over.

Line 6: The Peacemaker

This line describes the self-restraint of the stronger side in choosing on its own to end a conflict, so that the opponent can yield and go on living. In its exalted expression, compassion and consideration soften the emotional force, out of the recognition that life is sacred. In its weakened expression, the conflict does end, but only on terms that others can hardly bear.

Incarnation Crosses with the Sun in Gate 6

Right Angle Cross of Eden

This cross is about the loss of innocence: you are pushed out of a sheltered space into the world and have to find your way there. According to the teaching, life can begin with an early loss of protection or security, which can also take the form of ideals that were shattered early on.

For you, with the Sun in Gate 6, much revolves around the question of whether intimacy can truly succeed. The task is to find your own strategy for closeness, one that feels right to you. Intimacy today often brings conflict, because the emotional system currently lacks clarity. Closeness arises in one moment of the wave and does not have to carry a commitment. Here Gate 6 brings two sides together: the wish to stay innocent and the longing to give yourself fully to life. The teaching also describes a reluctance about having been pushed into the world: the heaviness of life can be felt in the body, and something wants to go back.

The theme is to say a full yes to life instead of mourning lost innocence. According to the teaching, whoever grasps this shows others the obvious: life wants to be lived. In the teaching, meeting another person can dissolve the wish to withdraw, and in that meeting it becomes clear why the protected place was left behind.

The angle is personal: encounters enrich your own path, but they don't fundamentally pull you away from it. You grow into this theme as you follow your Strategy and Authority. This is not a prediction.

Juxtaposition Cross of Conflict

The Juxtaposition Cross of Conflict is rare and follows a fixed path of its own. It sits as a transition between the two angle crosses of Gate 6, but it stops at companionship and does not reach the kind of closeness that a family grows out of. The conflict lies in the question of what leaving innocence behind was for.

For you, with your Sun in Gate 6, intimacy means above all friendship and connection with others. On the Design side are two gates of love: Gate 15 for the love of humanity and Gate 10 for self-love and your own behavior. The theme is to hold your ground and flourish through behavior that is true to you.

People on this cross overcome boundaries. Through friendship and companionship they come very close to others. For those others, this can also set off a deep crisis. For Line 4, the teaching gives the order as friendship first, then love.

This angle sits between the personal and the transpersonal and builds a bridge between them. It is like a train on fixed tracks, and those who stay with you for a longer stretch can ride along on your route. You grow into this theme when you follow your Strategy and Authority. It is not a prediction of events.

Left Angle Cross of the Plane

This Left Angle Cross reaches all the way down into the densest level of matter. It draws people deep into the material plane and shows that this plane holds us up, because we ourselves are made of it.

For you, with the Sun in Gate 6, this includes the idea that we are born to work, to produce and to be active. The teaching also links a life lived by your own Strategy and Authority here with having what you need, and explicitly not with wealth.

This cross is made for the world and shows others the way on the plane of matter. Things get difficult when you strive to go beyond it, out of the body or into the hereafter.

The angle is transpersonal: your theme matures through contact with other people, and they can noticeably change your path. You can grow into it when you follow your Strategy and Authority. It is not a destiny.
