Gate 7: The Gate of the Role of the Self

Who gives others direction? Gate 7 stands for this kind of leadership. It is the role you take on in your dealings with other people. You have it from the start and play it without noticing; it doesn't follow any ideal of the role you would like to have. The line shows what kind of leadership it is. It rests on logic: only what has already proven itself counts as reliable. The leadership of this gate acts on behalf of a community rather than for the sake of power, and it seeks to win people over rather than push them. It gets difficult when trends and the moods of the crowd pull you along instead of you staying with your own truth. Together with its harmonic gate, Gate 31, this gate forms a pair: Gate 31 gives leadership its voice and influence, while Gate 7 often gives it direction and a role. In this way, Gate 7 can become the power behind the throne.

The six lines of Gate 7

Line 1: The Authoritarian

This line stands for leading with a firm hand, either in an enlightened way or a tyrannical one. That is what separates authority that offers direction from authority that accepts only itself. In its exalted expression, the self leads with authority and sets basic values and rules. In its weakened expression, only one's own judgment counts, and distorted thinking insists that one's own authority is the best.

Line 2: The Democrat

This line is about leadership that serves the will of the majority. In its exalted expression, the self leads after being elected, guided by rules that are widely accepted. Together with Gate 31, this leadership can bring deep change to society. In its weakened expression, an elitist mindset takes hold after the election, with the self placing itself above the very people who voted for it.

Line 3: The Anarchist

This line stands for a rejection of institutionalized order. In its exalted expression, a steady drive for change, regardless of circumstances, pushes the self to try out many roles. In its weakened expression, no role is granted any value, to the point of nihilism. It is seen as a counterweight to fixed order and as a force that repeatedly sets what is familiar in motion.

Line 4: The Abdicator

This line is about being willing to let the judgment of the people or the law in force be the ruler. In its exalted expression, the self can accept the judgment of others with grace and foresight, and step back when doing so serves the whole. In its weakened expression, the judgment of others is not accepted, and letting go of power is hard.

Line 5: The General

This line stands for leadership with unlimited authority, the kind a society accepts only in times of crisis. In its exalted expression, the self in this role earns the loyalty it needs to bring the community's forces together. In its weakened expression, it sets itself apart from its own people, wants to win at any cost, and loses sight of loyalty.

Line 6: The Administrator

Handing over power and dividing it fairly takes skill, and that is what this line is about. In its exalted expression, the self makes it clear how responsibility is divided and gives each role a clear framework. In its weakened expression, distributing responsibility can become a way to gain power for oneself.

Incarnation Crosses with the Sun in Gate 7

Right Angle Cross of the Sphinx

In all four of its variations, this cross is about giving others direction.

For you, with the Sun in Gate 7, the variation that shows up is the one considered the most action-oriented. It comes with the wish to set the direction yourself and with the theme of a leadership role in which your word carries weight. The harmonic gate of the Sun gate is the path along which the cross seeks its fulfillment. For Gate 7, that is Gate 31, the wish for influence. Two perspectives meet in this cross: Gate 13’s open look back, and Gate 7, which thinks ahead logically and wants to sketch out a future.

How leadership is lived is colored by the line of your Sun. You’ll find the text on your Sun line in the section on your lines.

The angle is personal: encounters enrich your own path, but they don’t fundamentally pull you away from it. You grow into this theme when you follow your Strategy and Authority. It is not a prediction.

Juxtaposition Cross of Interaction

The Juxtaposition Cross of Interaction is rare and is a fixed path of its own. It links the leadership role of Gate 7 to the theme of Line 4: opportunities come through friendships and relationships.

For you, with your Sun in Gate 7, leadership is shaped by exchange. The image here is someone who stays in constant conversation with others and would rather keep up connections in the background until the chance comes to have influence as a leader.

This angle sits between the personal and the transpersonal and builds a bridge between them. It is like a train on fixed rails, and people who travel with you for a longer stretch can ride along on your track. You grow into this theme as you follow your Strategy and Authority. It is not a prediction of events.

Left Angle Cross of Masks

This Left Angle Cross is one of the great crosses of projection: other people trust those who carry it to untangle a situation that has ground to a halt, and in doing so they hang a mask on them.

For you, with your Sun in Gate 7, the model is the General of Line 5. When everything is in crisis, the General takes on full responsibility, delivers a solution that actually works, and then willingly sets the power aside again. On this cross, your reputation depends on whether the projection holds up: if you live up to what people expect of you, you gain respect, and if you don't manage it, the mask falls from your face. That is why preparation matters, because without it, people with this cross can easily buckle under the expectations of others.

The angle is transpersonal: your theme matures through contact with others, and they can noticeably change your path. You can grow into it by following your Strategy and Authority. It is not a destiny.
