Gate 61: The Gate of Mystery
Gate 61 is about the inner pressure to reach the truth and to know what is really so. This pressure is aimed at the unknown and wants to explore the mystery, all the way to the absolute. It can turn into inspiration, insights that are entirely your own. Understanding often arrives all at once, without a chain of reasoning, and it tends to come when you are quiet inside. With this gate you look for a standard that separates what is genuine from what is not; some of your insights reach beyond the moment and beyond the individual. It gets difficult when the compulsion to find answers takes over your thinking. It helps to tell fruitful questions from fruitless ones and not to insist on solving the mystery at any cost. The pressure to know stays with you for a whole lifetime, and its potential is stillness. The harmonic Gate 24 turns it into mental processing.
The six lines of Gate 61
Line 1: Hidden Knowledge
You seek knowledge about the mysteries of existence. This can strengthen a sense for universal principles or lead you away from everyday life. In its exalted expression, an innate sense with a slightly psychic tinge pushes you to explore these mysteries along esoteric paths, and in the process it firms up principles that hold true for everyone. In its weakened expression, trust in secret knowledge draws you into ascetic withdrawal, until the pull toward what is hidden can crowd out everyday reality.
Line 2: Natural Brilliance
Natural inspiration radiates outward. It either nourishes without any intention behind it, or there is a drive to amplify that effect. In its exalted expression, the inspiration reaches far, nourishes, and keeps no score. This makes it strongly attractive to others. In its weakened expression, once the effect has been noticed, everything revolves around making it bigger, in the mistaken belief that every insight deserves applause.
Line 3: Interdependence
Truth needs other people and can hardly hold its ground on its own. In its exalted expression, relationships form in which truths take shape and keep growing in safety. Working together fuels the drive to know. In its weakened expression, someone who has found a truth and is brimming with energy easily leaves others behind or gets worn down by resistance; impatience then tends to crowd out the sense of togetherness.
Line 4: Research
Inner truth is explored, either in focused depth or by drawing in many others, which can lead to confusion. In its exalted expression, gathered depth lets you get to the very bottom of inner truth and apply it to fundamental principles as fully as possible. In its weakened expression, you bring others in on the assumption that working together will boost inspiration, and you may end up with a confusing tangle of applications.
Line 5: Influence
Knowledge gains influence over others, either as recognized wisdom or as forced allegiance. In its exalted expression, the drive to know can condense into recognized wisdom. With a clear voice, much like an enlightened father figure, this wisdom speaks to an entire generation. In its weakened expression, you demand agreement from a position of power and resent any objection, so that your own influence stays intact.
Line 6: Attraction of Truth
A truth has an effect on the public at large. The question is whether it brings clarity to many or fades away in worn-out slogans. In its exalted expression, a keen sense of the collective seeks to win the public over to a truth and bring clarity to many people. In its weakened expression, you reach for tired slogans that may be delivered with fresh energy but fade away unheard, in the mistaken hope of enlightening the public with them.

Incarnation Crosses with the Sun in Gate 61
Right Angle Cross of Maya
What this cross shares across its variations is mastering the Maya, the world of appearances. You get there by accepting your own nature and reading from your own Type how the mechanics around you work, rather than by studying every detail.
The Sun in Gate 61 makes the Maya the focal point of your thinking. The pressure to know everything down to the smallest detail comes with a feeling of failing when you can't. What you're looking for is knowledge, not belief. This pressure can easily tip into the irrational when you try to get to the bottom of what can't be known. A simple rule helps here: know what you need to know about yourself, accept that the unknowable can't be known, and be able to let a lot go.
For the people who carry it, this pressure is often very uncomfortable, especially as long as the mind is treated as the Authority; to those around them, though, it is seen as a source of inspiration. Read spiritually, Gate 61 brings something new into the Maya so it doesn't stand still. While logic and abstraction want a fixed, documented world, these people push back: without mutation there would be no life. They encourage others to explore the Maya more deeply.
As a Right Angle Cross, it stands for a purpose that concerns your own path. Other people enrich it but don't fundamentally change its direction. You grow into it by following your Strategy and Authority; it is not fate.
Juxtaposition Cross of Thinking
This Juxtaposition Cross is the Cross of Thinking, and its image is Rodin's Thinker.
The theme is setting knowledge itself in motion. Instead of trying to grasp what can't be known, this cross turns to what already exists and looks for more in it than anyone has seen so far, for example something in a logical assumption that nobody has noticed yet.
The Design carries the insight that laws have to grow and change as we mature. The fear of failing, a heavy theme in the Right Angle variant, falls away here.
The Juxtaposition Cross is rare, and it is a fixed path of your own, like a train on its tracks. People who spend a long time with you can get pulled into this path along with you. You grow into it; it is neither fate nor a demand.
Left Angle Cross of Obscuration
This Left Angle Cross wants to get to the bottom of the deepest things, and it arrives at a small slice of obscure, dark knowledge that it wants to turn into a general law. Often it succeeds only with difficulty.
Gate 61 has two faces: the striving for universal principles and deep hidden knowledge and, at the other end, the obscure that doesn’t care about universal principles at all. Part of the theme is to inspire others deeply through the obscure and to gain a great deal of influence. Unlike the Right Angle, which imposes nothing on anyone, this Left Angle actively works to win others over to its theme.
At the same time, there is value here: taken together, the obscure makes up a large part of the world’s diversity, and the teaching explicitly refrains from judging it morally. The shadow side is already in the word. If you turn only toward the dark, you overlook what could be recognized, and you can lead others away from the search for truth onto a side path.
As a Left Angle Cross, it is fulfilled through being with others, whose influence can noticeably change your path. You grow into it; it is not a prediction.
