Center

Head Center

Your Head produces questions and ideas on its own, and not all of them need an answer.

In Human Design, a center is either defined or undefined. An undefined center is called open when none of its gates is activated, and undefined with individual gates otherwise.

Defined

In the teaching, the Head Center creates the urge to pursue questions. It supplies pressure to think rather than ready-made answers, and it is regarded as the place of inspiration.

In your chart, it is defined. Your Head keeps producing ideas, doubts and possibilities. For other people, this can feel stimulating and, at the same time, like a pull to think along with you. The Head is not a motor itself, so the focus here is less on doing and more on vision, insight and the search for meaning.

The teaching advises you to simply listen to the inspiration: answers can't be forced, and not every idea wants to be acted on. The Head is meant to inspire, not to make decisions. That is what Strategy and Authority are there for.

A 14-day experiment

For 14 days, notice which questions or ideas come up by themselves in quiet everyday moments, and write down which ones are still there after a few days. Also make a note when hardly anything came up.

Undefined (with individual gates)

Your Head Center is undefined but has at least one activated gate. You pick up ideas and impulses from your surroundings. The risk here is that you treat other people's questions and puzzles as if they were your own.

The gift is considered to be the ability to look at thoughts without getting lost in them. From this, you can develop an eye for what throws other people off mentally.

Under pressure, the Not-Self can show up: then you cling to the questions themselves, want to be a thinker, devote yourself to a single question, or make decisions about your life based on puzzles. An activated gate in the Head can also stir up an urge to keep gathering more and more information to get rid of its pressure. A helpful counter-question is whether your thinking is serving you right now.

A 14-day experiment

When your thoughts start circling, notice whether you already had the question before a conversation or a post. Also make a note when you couldn't tell the difference.

Open (no gates)

Your Head Center is open. None of its gates is activated in your chart. You take in the stimulation around you. Along the way, you may end up treating other people's questions and puzzles as if they were your own.

With a completely open Head, it can be hard to separate what matters from what doesn't. In the Not-Self, your attention turns to puzzles and mysteries you want to solve.

The gift here is seen as being able to look at thoughts without mistaking yourself for them. From this, you can develop an eye for what throws other people off mentally. A helpful question to ask yourself is whether your thinking is serving you right now.

A 14-day experiment

When a thought won't let go of you, notice what happened just before it, such as a conversation or a post. Also note the times you found no trigger.
