Gate 26: The Gate of the Egoist

Gate 26 puts the strength of the ego at the center; it is also called the Gate of the Egoist and the Gate of the Trickster. You want to achieve a lot with little effort, and the gain should be worth the trouble. Part of this is a flexible memory that you are born with and that works on its own, along with an occasional tendency to describe the past in a favorable light. The image of this gate includes the salesperson: persuading, tuning your words to the person in front of you, and helping others see what they truly want in life. Because this is a Tribal gate, it carries the idea that your own advantage can serve everyone. The difficult side is exaggeration and power games. The question of integrity belongs to this gate as well, for example making only the promises you can keep. You may also find it hard to take criticism or admit old mistakes, because anything uncomfortable is easily tuned out by instinct.

The six lines of Gate 26

Line 1: A Bird in the Hand

This line centers on how the ego relates to what it has already achieved. In its exalted expression, what has been achieved becomes fertile ground for dreams that let the ego move past its limits without being taken in by prospects that are hard to reach. In its weakened expression, what has been achieved is not enough for the ego, and it treats it as a license to take ill-considered risks.

Line 2: The Lessons of History

This line asks how the ego deals with past experiences. In its exalted expression, the ego matures through them by reflecting on what came before with strength and thoroughness, and in this way it prepares for what lies ahead. In its weakened expression, the urge to act overrides what the experiences of the past advise. The question is whether memory remains a counselor or goes unheard.

Line 3: Influence

This line is about gathering support once you have prepared well. In its exalted expression, the Ego, with the necessary weight behind it, can win over supporters and focus a community's efforts on a single goal. In its weakened expression, when you court support, you underestimate the resistance that can come from others.

Line 4: Censorship

Here memory is altered by leaving something out. In its exalted expression, the ego keeps its strength by forgetting, and deliberately leaving things out can even protect a community from itself. In its weakened expression, worry about unforeseeable consequences leads you to remember only what has been selected, so that what already exists stays as it is.

Line 5: Adaptability

This line asks how the ego handles fundamental change. In its exalted expression, an understanding of how processes unfold pairs with a focused use of force, and memory increases the ego's impact on others. In its weakened expression, the ego resists necessary changes to its own nature and responds with resentment rather than adapting.

Line 6: Authority

This line describes legitimate influence that arises on its own from sound action. In its exalted expression, the influence of a strong ego rests on sound action, carried by reason and intention that endure for a long time. In its weakened expression, authority is more a role and a symbol; it can stand for stability without having any genuine effect.

Incarnation Crosses with the Sun in Gate 26

Right Angle Cross of Rulership

All variations of this cross share a theme of rulership, which differs from gate to gate: gracious and turned toward people (Gate 22), concerned for the oppressed (Gate 47), matter-of-course and somewhat distant (Gate 45) and, here, over your own ego (Gate 26).

For you, with the Sun in Gate 26, rulership is exercised through exaggeration and marketing: you present yourself as a leader and offer that like a product, which is very much in step with the times. The ruler of Gate 45 keeps their distance, while this cross mingles with people, shakes hands and acts as if it belongs, whether that is true or not.

The path to power starts with the claim to the right to rule, followed by promises about what will be delivered; the actual governing is then learned on the job. This is where politics as a product has its origin. In the teaching, this counts as simply another form of rulership, neither better nor worse than the others.

The angle is personal: encounters enrich your own path but do not fundamentally pull you away from it. You grow into this theme when you follow your Strategy and Authority. It is not a prediction.

Juxtaposition Cross of the Trickster

The Juxtaposition Cross of the Trickster is rare, and it is a fixed path of its own. Gate 26 is also considered the Gate of the Trickster, and in the Juxtaposition Cross deception moves to the foreground. Whoever plays along can end up being the one who gets taken advantage of. This describes an archetype and passes no judgment on your honesty: part of the theme is the question of how far persuading and exaggerating may go.

In this view, every Trickster is met by people who are willing to be fooled. Both sides belong to the same game. Many ancient cultures also honor the Trickster: the figure is seen as provocative and alluring, someone who fools even the gods.

This angle sits between the personal and the transpersonal and builds a bridge between them. It is like a train on fixed rails, and people who travel with you for a longer stretch can ride along on your track. You grow into this theme when you follow your Strategy and Authority. It does not predict events.

Left Angle Cross of Confrontation

In this Left Angle Cross, rule takes on a hard edge when grace is missing, along with an eye for the needs of the people one means to serve. At the extreme, a person ends up ruling only for themselves.

For you, with the Sun in Gate 26, the cross challenges those in power and holds their own strength up in front of them. This is not a fair fight: almost anything gets used to win, because the ego does not want to lose. Usually such people turn against the powerful. They want to bring them down by blowing their weaknesses and mistakes out of proportion, and this is where political attack ads, which also make use of untruths, have their origin.

This cannot be judged in moral terms. These people embody an archetype, and for anyone who engages correctly with their game, that is fine too.

The angle is transpersonal: your theme matures through contact with others, and they can noticeably change your path. You can grow into it by following your Strategy and Authority. It is not a fate.
