Heart Center
Your willpower carries you through what you truly stand for, and it needs time to recover between efforts.
In Human Design, a center is either defined or undefined. An undefined center is called open when none of its gates is activated, and undefined with individual gates otherwise.
Defined
In this teaching, the Heart (or Ego) Center is a motor for willpower. It is connected to self-worth and to material things.
In your chart, it is defined. Your willpower carries you mainly through what you truly stand for. Things you inwardly reject may be harder for you to stick with, even when they would be useful. This center is a motor that runs in bursts: strong efforts are followed by pauses, and recovery is part of the pattern.
When you give your word, it carries weight: in this view, keeping promises belongs to a defined Heart. So it makes sense to commit only once you stand behind something according to your Strategy and Authority, and to promise only what you actually want to keep.
For 14 days, notice when your drive for a task shows up on its own and when you have to push yourself into it. Also note when things didn't match this description.
Undefined (with individual gates)
Your Heart Center is undefined but has at least one activated gate. This center doesn't hand you anything you would have to prove. Your willpower isn't consistent, and the urge to measure yourself against others is seen as conditioning from outside.
In the Not-Self, you want to prove your worth, gain power or get your way, and you struggle with the urge to compare yourself with others. A typical pattern is making unnecessary promises and keeping them even after you no longer stand behind them. The question underneath is: What else do I have to prove so that others will recognize my worth? The teaching answers: worth can't be earned through achievement.
In the Not-Self, this undefined center can easily take the wheel; what you then want to prove often comes from other undefined centers.
Notice when you set yourself a goal or make a promise so you won't come across as weak. Also write down the commitments you made for some other reason.
Open (no gates)
Your Heart Center is open. None of its gates are activated in your chart. This center gives you nothing you would have to prove. Your willpower isn't steady, and the urge to measure yourself against others is seen as an imprint from outside.
A completely open Heart Center can swing between feeling very important and feeling that you aren't enough. It responds to the promise of gaining worth through groups or status.
In the Not-Self, you're quick to want to prove yourself, to gain power or get your way, and you struggle with comparing yourself to others. Making unnecessary promises is typical, and you keep them even when you no longer stand behind them. The question underneath is what else you have to prove so that others will recognize your worth. The teaching's answer: worth can't be earned through achievement.
In calm everyday moments, notice when you compare yourself with someone, and write down what happened just before. Also note the days when it didn't happen.
