Gate 27: The Gate of Tending, Nourishing and Caring

Nothing thrives without care and attention, and that is one way to describe the caring of Gate 27. It moves you to look after others, and it stands for a compassion that wants to watch over, protect and nourish. The right way is to take care of yourself first, because you can only give what you have. This care runs both ways: if you look after others, you are made to receive care yourself as well. It reaches far beyond family, into teams and communities, and is meant to make sure no one in your circle has to go without what they need. It gets difficult when you lose yourself in caring for others and neglect your own needs. The harmonic gate, Gate 50, brings values and standards into this care; together, they stand for guardianship.

The six lines of Gate 27

Line 1: Self-Interest

This line asks how you live out caring for yourself. In its exalted expression, you take care of yourself first, as a basic law rooted in the ego, one that doesn't automatically put others at a disadvantage. In its weakened expression, self-interest shows up as envy. Here, caring for yourself is where all caring begins.

Line 2: Self-Provision

The simple principle here is that only someone who has something can give. In its exalted expression, the ability to nourish and provide for others can be fully developed. In its weakened expression, you tend to live off other people's reserves rather than giving from your own. Caring for others requires reserves of your own.

Line 3: Greed

This line stands for the craving for far more than you need. In its exalted expression, this wanting more shows up on a soul level as curiosity about what is hidden, and it can give rise to an advantage through knowledge or possessions. In its weakened expression, the greed stays trivial and without balance, a hunger for power that paralyzes and holds you in place.

Line 4: Generosity

Here, abundance you have gained is shared as a matter of course. In its exalted expression, giving is generous and attentive to quality, so the recipients are carefully chosen. In its weakened expression, things are handed out indiscriminately, and strength and power can be lost in the process. This line asks whether abundance is shared with discernment.

Line 5: The Trustee

This line is about distributing resources that others have entrusted to you. In its exalted expression, entrusted resources are handled with care, either by distributing them yourself in a way that stays true to your principles or by sensing who else can do this. In its weakened expression, a narrow way of operating holds back both distributing and asking for advice, and the fear of losing power limits the care you can give.

Line 6: Wariness

This line stands for a caution meant to keep your generosity from being taken advantage of. In its exalted expression, care takes a sober look at its own means and follows feeling and instinct in doing so. In its weakened expression, the caution grows into strong suspicion that limits your care. What this points to is the balance between trust and protecting your own resources.

Incarnation Crosses with the Sun in Gate 27

Right Angle Cross of the Unexpected

This cross is the most peculiar of the Right Angle Crosses: something entirely unexpected is often part of who these people are, and the unexpected shapes their lives. They give the world the impression that not everything can be calculated. It brings chaos theory to mind, yet it only looks chaotic in the Maya, the world of appearances; there is no chaotic source behind it.

For you, with the Sun in Gate 27, the gate of nourishment and caring, this includes the reminder that in a surprising individual case, concern for a person can outweigh the law. A law counts as good only as long as it nourishes and serves the whole. On this cross, the unexpected shows up for better and for worse, and radical turns are possible.

The angle is personal: encounters enrich your own path but don't fundamentally pull you away from it. You grow into this theme when you follow your Strategy and Authority. It is not a prediction.

Juxtaposition Cross of Caring

The Juxtaposition Cross of Caring is rare and a fixed path of its own. It is fixed on care: the theme is looking after others and taking care of many things. People who receive this care can value it, and those who carry this cross often find it a heavy load.

For you, with your Sun in Gate 27, what lies behind this is the fear of a meaningless life, which works its way in through your Personality Earth in Gate 28. Care is the counterweight to that fear, and in this way the cross is, at heart, also caring for itself. Charity is a firm principle here, for example helping elderly people across the street.

This angle sits between the personal and the transpersonal and builds a bridge between them. It is like a train running on fixed rails, and people who stay with you for a longer time can ride along on your track. You grow into this theme when you follow your Strategy and Authority. This is not a prediction of events.

Left Angle Cross of Alignment

This Left Angle Cross has to do with the unexpected: it takes in the moment of upheaval, steers it in a direction, and returns it to the flow. Here is the image: someone suddenly caught by an obstacle knows the angle at which to take off so they land in the bushes instead of against the wall. This can't happen without risk, and the cross can also cause a lot of harm.

For you, with the Sun in Gate 27, the cross reacts to the unexpected and wants to put it to use. This often leaves many people behind. Your Design Earth sits on a line that is called betrayal. One fitting picture is someone who switches on the spot to a new teacher who unexpectedly comes to town. That can be the right move and carry you forward, but often all that lies behind it is the urge to take every unexpected turn. In Line 6, according to the teaching, such leaps can have especially drastic consequences.

The angle is transpersonal: your theme matures through contact with others, and they can noticeably change your path. You can grow into it by following your Strategy and Authority. It is not a fate.
