Gate 35: The Gate of Change

Gate 35 is about the hunger for new experience and change. Its voice says something like “I feel,” usually in the sense of: it's time for something new. With this gate, you have little patience for boredom. What's familiar wears on you quickly, and when life stalls, impatience or irritability can come up. Fixed goals don't suit this gate. What matters is what an experience teaches you. Part of this gate is the desire to learn many of the things that appeal to you. Change moves through a cycle with a beginning, a middle and an end: you let go of the old, and after a period of transition, something new can arrive. The task is to distinguish between the experiences that are good for you and the ones you seek out or repeat purely out of inner pressure. In this view, all those experiences can turn into wisdom over time.

The six lines of Gate 35

Line 1: Humility

This line stands for the ability to accept a no or a rejection without being broken by it. It shows up where the path doesn't go as planned. In its exalted expression, you accept rejections and changes of course as ordinary markers along the way. In its weakened expression, you take a rejection personally, and your sense of self-worth can suffer.

Line 2: Creative Block

Here inspiration stays away, and everything stalls. This line asks how you experience that lull. In its exalted expression, you accept that inspiration comes and goes, because creative energy rises and falls. In its weakened expression, the fear of standing still drives you into restless busyness. The inner emptiness remains anyway, and you stay stuck where you are.

Line 3: Collaboration

This is about working together in a way that produces more than any one person could contribute alone. In its exalted expression, the focus is on shared progress: you encourage others and walk alongside them as they go through change. In its weakened expression, you put yourself at the center of what is happening, and what the others accomplish slips out of view.

Line 4: Hunger for Progress

This line describes a hunger for the new that can hardly be satisfied. In its exalted expression, it shows up in a tempered form: the urge for change grips you at times in an almost compulsive way, then eases off again and loses its edge over the years. In its weakened expression, your own position can tempt you to collect advantages, even when others end up shortchanged.

Line 5: Selflessness

This line puts shared progress ahead of your own. The first question is what the whole needs. In its exalted expression, a way of mediating that encourages exchange and harmony aims at changes that benefit everyone, including the one doing the mediating. In its weakened expression, for all your willingness to help, a nagging feeling persists that you yourself have been left behind.

Line 6: Correction

This line is about the power to set right what has gone off course. In its exalted expression, ambition and a clarifying process help corrections take effect at the right time and actually change something. In its weakened expression, the correction turns mercilessly harsh. That may be necessary in your own life, but with other people, such harshness easily provokes resistance.

Incarnation Crosses with the Sun in Gate 35

Right Angle Cross of Consciousness

People who carry this Right Angle Cross are questioners. What the variants share is a compulsion to order the world in their heads, to secure reliable patterns and to search for the why. With the Sun in Gate 35, though, the root lies somewhere else: rather than in pressure in the head and doubt, it lies in the longing for experience and in the open question of whether you give in to it.

Gate 35 is like a comma in the sentence of genetics. For this cross, becoming civilized means reaching a point where you can pause. The potential lies in the voice of experience, which can say: I know this, I don’t need it anymore, and there is a better way or no way at all. Or it may announce a desire for change without that change being needed right now.

Whether this potential comes to fruition remains open, because the pressure in one of the most unstable emotional systems is strong. It is blind energy fueling progress that has no awareness of its own. The cross belongs to the Quarter of Civilization because progress is what counts there: Gate 35 delivers experiences that humanity needs, and anyone who merely calms these people down cuts off a great deal of shared experience.

As a Right Angle Cross, it stands for a purpose that concerns your own path. Other people enrich it but do not fundamentally redirect it. You grow into it by following your Strategy and Authority; it is not fate.

Juxtaposition Cross of Experience

This cross shows the insatiable hunger for progress in a mature form, one that eases with time: to keep building and growing, into the next valley, up to the next peak, across the next sea, with all the doubts and questions that come along.

With the Sun in Gate 35, the cross points to the great loners of experience. They want to know, for example, what it is like to cross Europe on foot, and they hold on to one very specific experience. What drives them is the expectation that an experience will pay off. Great disappointment often grows out of this, yet a person with this cross is built to try out many paths.

The Juxtaposition Cross is rare, and it is a fixed path of its own, like a train on its tracks. People who spend a long time with you can get drawn into this path along with you. You grow into it; it is neither fate nor a claim you have to make.

Left Angle Cross of Separation

This Left Angle Cross belongs to a Collective path of experience whose aim is sharing.

With the Sun in Gate 35, the question at hand is what is left over from an experience. In this view, experiencing something does not on its own create a bond, and the path of experience leads through crisis to separation. This describes the path of the cross as a whole, not your relationships.

What is meant here is a separation that makes life possible in large societies where people do not know those around them. According to one reading, this is where the anonymous big city has its origin, in contrast to the old tribal imprint that saw strangers as a danger. Beneath this, with the Design Sun in Gate 22, lies grace; it leaves room for very different experiences and people, and it makes cooperation possible without anyone needing to be personally close or belong to the same tribe. This distance opens the way to more experiences, and more colorful ones, instead of waiting for a single controlled one.

As a Left Angle Cross, it comes to fulfillment in being together with others, whose influence can noticeably change your path. You grow into it; it is not a prediction.
