Gate 36: The Gate of Crisis
Gate 36 is about emotional crises that can come back again and again and leave you deeply unsettled. Here, feelings lead to change, and that change often throws not only you but also the people around you off balance. New experiences and change can trigger fear, and yet change can also be something you long for; part of this is the recurring hope that now, at last, the experience you have been yearning for will happen. This gate is under high pressure: when the emotional wave drives your actions instead of the clarity that can emerge within it, one crisis can follow another. With some distance from the emotions and some reflection, crises can become teachers and a source of wisdom. It helps not to let the highs or lows push you when you make decisions, and to follow your Strategy and Authority instead. The harmonic gate, Gate 35, brings the step toward the next experience.
The six lines of Gate 36
Line 1: Resistance
This line is about holding your ground under pressure and insisting on what is familiar. In its exalted expression, inner strength gives you the courage to get through crises, even when many things point the other way. In its weakened expression, you resist change on principle and cling rigidly to what you are used to. This can be what creates the very pushback you fear.
Line 2: Support
When everything around them is crumbling, this line stands by others and carries them for a stretch through the hard times. In its exalted expression, resourcefulness and feeling flow into projects meant to help others through difficult times. In its weakened expression, help comes only case by case, in very practical ways, and when there is no other option.
Line 3: Turning Point
This line marks the point where the downward trend has lost its force. In its exalted expression, emotional depth carries you through the crisis, and something new arises from the ruins of the old. In its weakened expression, you say yes to the change, yet your heart still clings to what came before. Whatever you drag along from the old can put the new at risk again later on.
Line 4: Hidden Knowledge
This line is about secret knowledge in difficult times: does it serve your own preparation, or does it end up in the hands of an opponent? In its exalted expression, confidential or esoteric knowledge helps you sense a decline early and be ready for change and crisis. In its weakened expression, there is a pull to bow to a stronger counterpart and offer them what you know about the crisis so that you yourself can get through.
Line 5: Underground
Here, in a crisis, you live out of sight. What matters is whether calm or nervousness gains the upper hand. In its exalted expression, you stay composed even in difficult situations. Crises, whether of your own making or coming from outside, take little out of you. In its weakened expression, the mood of the crisis makes you restless, and this restlessness can tempt you to be untrue to yourself.
Line 6: Justice
This line trusts that what is right will prevail in the long run, even if the road there has its crises. In its exalted expression, a crisis feels right when it springs from a sincere feeling, carried by the belief that darkness destroys itself over time. In its weakened expression, sadness or cynicism lingers, because even when the feelings are true, a crisis seems to come with them again and again.

Incarnation Crosses with the Sun in Gate 36
Right Angle Cross of Eden
The Right Angle Cross of Eden links intimacy with the question of whether it will become exciting; at its root lies a longing for excitement in closeness. Its guiding image is the expulsion from paradise, and if you carry this cross, you have to go far out into the world to find your own knowledge and your own path.
With the Sun in Gate 36, crisis moves to the center, together with an inexperience that hungers for experience. The teaching often speaks of a surprising, sometimes painful beginning in which a sense of safety and security can be lost early, for example when a protected life comes to a sudden end. Inwardly, too, it is seen as the cross of lost innocence: in this view, ideals often break early, and simplicity and beauty are lost.
Sexuality carries great weight here. It is regarded as an inheritance from Eden and at the same time as a way to win back the lost paradise, and many dilemmas have their roots in it. The Design side contributes ideas and expressive power, so this cross holds the chance to explore intimacy, to convey it to others and to bring it to a higher level.
A Right Angle Cross shows a personal theme: your path belongs to you, and encounters color it without redirecting it. It makes no claim on you and does not fix your fate; you live it when you follow your Strategy and Authority.
Juxtaposition Cross of Crisis
The Juxtaposition Cross of Crisis is a crisis of behavior. Here the Personality seeks fulfillment and its role, including in intimacy and sexuality; the Design side brings in behavior, self-love and love of humanity.
When the Sun is in Gate 36, behavior turns toward its own obsession and asks whether this is really who you are. The crisis grows out of this dualistic core conflict.
People on this cross can be good at fathoming other people's crises, while they stumble more easily over their own.
Juxtaposition Crosses are rare. Your path here is fixed and your own, a bridge between a personal and a transpersonal theme, much like a train on its rails. In this view, someone who stays with you for a longer time can ride along for part of the way. This is not a prediction; the meaning reveals itself over the course of your life.
Left Angle Cross of the Plane
This Left Angle Cross looks for a balance between two forces: keeping pace with the current of the community while also satisfying a strong desire for exciting experiences.
With the Sun in Gate 36, experience only comes to life together with another person. What matters is having a counterpart, not enjoyment for yourself alone. On this cross you often meet the attitude that the thrill of the first moment is enough, and that you cannot love someone you don’t find exciting.
With Profile 6/3, a pendulum pattern shows up: committing fully to one side, burning out there, and running over to the other.
In the teaching, balance is linked to a relationship that begins in a way that feels right: behavior and needs are then more likely to fit together. This is not a prediction about your relationships.
A Left Angle Cross is a transpersonal theme that is fulfilled only through your interaction with others. This path needs people who fit it and help carry it. This is not fate; the meaning of the cross reveals itself over the course of your life.
